Canines and Car Rides How to keep your dog safe

We all know Fido LOVES to go for a ride in the car and supervise us while we run our errands. I don’t know about your canine, but mine loves a trip to the local bank where she is sure to receive a tasty treat along my deposit slip.

But, cars can also be a dangerous place for dogs.  Just like us, they are susceptible to trauma and whiplash from any impacts or sudden stops. Many times, they are severely injured due to a lack of restraint.  We have learned the motto to “buckle up” and often times feel “naked” without the feel of the seat belt hooked across our bodies, but we can easily overlook our furry co pilot.

It is more important than ever to have a safety harness for your dog and to utilize it in any and all car trips.  There are many makes and models out there and it is important to find one that works for you, your pet and your vehicle.

One of my favorite models is the Clickit harness from Sleepypod.  It utilizes three points of attachment mimicking that of human seat belts. By having three points of attachment, it allows forces to be dissipated and reduces injury to your dog.  They have even done testing with canine crash dummies to examine the most effective way to keep your pet safe in a collision.

So feel free to let Fido join you on your next visit to the bank, just make sure he is buckled up!
